All Sufficiency For All Things

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

Remembering “all” means “all”, we continue looking at this verse that has four “all’s” in it. We have all-sufficiency. We could translate this word as self-sufficient. However, the whole context is the grace of God, which comes from God not from self. In fact, in 2 Corinthians 3:5 Paul makes it clear that, “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.

With that in mind, I think it means that we have received sufficiency—enough to satisfy ourselves. That brings out the other meaning of the word as “contentment.” Paul uses that meaning in 1 Timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

So, what’s this entire word study mean? I think it means that God supplies everything we need for whatever work He has called us to do. We can live in contentment knowing that He is our source and is making abounding grace to us. As we mentioned last devotional, we have all-sufficiency to do things—good works toward others. So we have all-sufficiency in all things. The word “things” is in italics so supplied by the translators. Another way, more closely aligned to the Greek, is to say this is “having always all sufficiency in everything” (American Standard Version)

I think all this is to say that through the abounding grace of God we have everything we need for everything He has called us to do. If we know He will supply, then we can just go about with our call. He has given us all sufficiency for all things. That’s the truth.
