Jesus the Vine of Life

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5

The Greek word means vine. Jesus used the word in Luke 22:18, “For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.”

Jesus said He was the vine and we are the branches. This is certainly a picture of our needed dependence on Jesus. We must rely on Him to supply our daily needs. We are the branches. The branches bear the fruit. Jesus describes this because of abiding in Him.

Notice Jesus said, He that abides in Me and I in Him. Many people say they are Christians. They think they are abiding in Him. But Jesus is not abiding in them. Jesus comes into your life when you invite Him by believing in Him.

When I was young, my parents had a grape-vine. It began growing everywhere. My dad would go out and prune back the branches. They looked like He cut off so much they would never grow again. The next spring they grew back and the grapes were even better.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” John 15:1-2

We grow fruit, not by doing, but by abiding. The abiding bears the fruit. It’s taking of the nature of Jesus and turning that into fruit.

I’ve seen many people burn out from doing. They knock on doors, hand out tracts, or visit the prisons. They aren’t abiding, and soon they run out of life. We can do nothing without Him. We are not doers of works. We are doers of the Word. We believe. We have faith. We love. All because we abide in Him and He in us. That’s grace.
