Through Grace, Abound In Good Work

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

One final look at this verse. (Well maybe not final). I’m thinking this verse is my 2013 verse. I’m looking for all grace to abound. We have mentioned that we abound so that we are abounding.

That last phrase points that out—may abound to every good work. “Every,” by the way is the same Greek word as “all.” We receive God’s abundance so that we may abound. That’s the message of Love. Because we love Him, we do good work. We don’t do good work to make Him love us or make Him approve of us. We don’t do good work in order to get the fullness of His grace. We abound in good work because of His grace.

The word “that” could be translated “in order that.” His grace abounds to us in order that we may abound toward others. He abounds to us in order that we abound in our good work. This is work singular and not works plural. God has a work for us to do. We want to do many things or works for Him but all those works must fit into His work.

Everything we do should abound toward that call. Every work should rely on His sufficiency. To step out of His sufficiency is to try to do works apart from Him and that doesn’t lead to “good” as He defines good. Everyone has a purpose—a work. We can abound always in that good work if we remain in His grace. If we leave the grace, we fall into works. If we abide in His grace—His all-sufficient grace, we can abound in the work He has for us to do in the Kingdom.
