A Look at Psalm 19 – Part 3

open bible with text

Today we’re continuing our study of Psalm 19:7-11, and we’re looking specifically at verse 8:

The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes
.”

Again in these five verses we’re talking about the Word of God, its benefits to us and for us.

The Psalmist declares that the statutes of the Lord are right. God’s Word, what He has spoken to man, is right. It is straight talk, no hidden agendas. It is true. And because His Word is right (straight, correct to follow), it causes your heart to rejoice.

God’s Word brings joy and gladness to your heart. It brings pleasure to your soul; it comforts and gives courage. The prophet, Jeremiah, said that when he found the words of the Lord, he ate them and they were the joy and rejoicing of his heart (Jeremiah 15:16). God’s Word will cheer you up when you’re down. It will brighten up your day, and make your heart glad.

Too many people today are reading and hearing words that do not bring joy, comfort, peace, and rejoicing. But God’s Word will always cause you to rejoice.

God’s Word, His commandments are pure; they’re clean. They’re not mixed with filth or lies. So when you take of His Word, you are receiving pure, clean encouragement and admonitions straight from God. And, His commandments, His Word, will be light for your pathway. It will enlighten your eyes; that is, it will be luminous and shine for you. One version says it will set on fire your eyes. Psalm 119:105 says that the Word of God is “a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”.

The benefits of the Word of God are absolutely necessary for living in this world. When you allow God’s words to enter your heart and mind, you’ll be encouraged and strengthened; your way will be clearer and your eyes will see God’s power in your midst.

I hope you’ll meditate further, mull over, ponder, think on this verse today and let your heart rejoice in God’s benefits.
