Minister Grace to Those Listening

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Ephesians 4:29

Paul turns to address a problem. Christians need to put a watch on their mouth. Paul lists a number of things they might have done before they became believers. Now they should put off these things that are not fitting a believer. He talks about things like lying, stealing, and lusting. Put off those things and begin to walk by the Spirit.

So what is corrupt communication? It could mean several things. The first is just rotten bad language. These people came out of the work-a-day world and spoke the foul language of the people. Now it was time to set themselves apart from that environment. Bad language does not edify or build up those who hear it. In fact, it more likely tears then down.

Second, it could mean, they are just speaking the regular language and not speaking the Word. Today we speak the language of the world. We speak illness and disease. We speak poverty and lack. We speak against everything and everybody including government and our pastors. This is language which does not edify. It’s rusted and corrupted speech.

Third, I think this is not speaking grace to the hearer. In other words, does the hearer get grace or law? Are they hearing the good news or the bad news? Does it edify? The Word edifies. So speaking the Word will bring grace to the hearer. Speaking the Word is speaking God’s covenant word into the hearer—grace and peace.

Our words minister. We are ministers of grace or corruption. When we speak God’s Word, we speak life. Life and death is in our power. It comes from what we speak. Let’s follow the word from Paul and only speak what is edifying and what ministers grace to those who hear us.
