Be of Good Comfort

11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 12 Greet one another with an holy kiss. 13 All the saints salute you. 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:11-14

I’m picking up where I left off a couple of days ago. Paul lists four imperatives– be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace.

First, he said we be perfect. We looked at that the other day.

Second, be of good comfort. Paul said some tough things in his letters. Corinth seemed to have more problems than the other churches. There were still those trying to undermine his apostleship and discredit him and his teaching. Many of the church were stanch Paul supporters. Paul told them be of good comfort.

The Greek word is the same basic word as used for the comforter—the Holy Spirit. I think he might have that in mind as he ended with “the communion of the Holy Ghost.” He taught about the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit is called alongside of each of them to comfort them.

I also think he meant to stick together. He told them to call alongside your fellow believers to make your stand. Take comfort in each other. They were all in this together and Paul wasn’t always going to be there for them. Paul did come and spend a couple of months with them. Then the church would stand on its own.

This is one reason for the local church. Many say they can be a Christian and not go to church. Yet there is great comfort during trials from fellow believers. We all have a mission and its easier working together. One person can do one thing. Many persons can do many things. When one member weeps we all can weep alongside and encourage. When one member receives praise, all members can glorify God for the blessing.

Don’t let the trials, adversities, and problems discourage you. Be of good comfort. “And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.”  (Luke 8:48)
