Grace Super Abounds To the Glory of God

For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4:15

In the verses preceding this one, Paul discusses what he is going through for the sake of the Gospel. “8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-10)

All these things he did for “your” sakes. He was willing to put aside all comforts and bring them the good news of grace. He obeyed the Holy Spirit and wrote these things down for “our” sakes. The Word we have didn’t come easy. Writing was difficult. They didn’t have computers or even ballpoint pens. Paul was also busy preaching. I think there were times when imprisoned he could have time to write. Paul wrote 2 Corinthians during his third missionary journey probably from Macedonia. Paul mentioned in  2 Corinthians 2:12-13 that he had already left Ephesus and traveled through Troas into Macedonia. In 2 Corinthians 7:5, he mentioned being in Macedonia.

His work was to see abundant grace manifested in their lives. He wanted that grace to multiply and increase and through that, their thanksgiving would bring great glory to God. He wanted to see them pour forth freely given gratitude to God for His amazing grace.

This was Paul’s mission. He was delivering the message of abundant grace. He was doing so that God would receive the glory. Paul was not looking for personal glory or aggrandizement. He wanted the outpouring of abundant grace on the people to result in a superabundance of gratitude, all to the glory of God. In other words, he wanted to see the message of grace redound–super abound in the lives of the Church at Corinth and ours as well. After all, God was the total supply of grace through the finished work of Jesus. Paul was willing to go through severe hardships to see God receive the glory due Him.

Should that be our mission as well? Our goal is that God get all the glory for anything we might have done. Our desire is that all things we do cause gratitude to super abound for the glory of God. This happens when we share the marvelous grace of God through Jesus.
