What’s Your Mouth Saying?

fountain-wide

“The mouth of the righteous is a well of life…”
Proverbs 10:11

Watching a TV program with my young grandchildren gave me an experience I wasn’t soon to forget. I will preface to say that our grandchildren are polite kids, usually saying please and always saying thank you. While we watched someone act in a ridiculous way on the TV screen, I inadvertently made the mistake of saying “That was stupid”. The grandkids stared at me with shocked expressions and immediately my granddaughter said, “Grandma, we don’t say that.” Our middle grandson chimed in “Oh, oh, Grandma used the “S” word!” I was caught in the act; and of course I had to apologize. From that point on, I was careful not to use the “S” word again.

I think too many times we say certain things we shouldn’t say. But it also involves our thinking. If we think in negative terms, we’ll let negative words or worse come out of our mouths. The Word says that “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45). We HAVE to get away from speaking negative, from speaking foul language, from calling our life the way it IS at that moment.

Proverbs 10:11 declares that the mouth of the righteous person is a well of life. That doesn’t give you a picture of bad or foul language spewing out of your mouth, does it? The New Living Translation puts it this way: “The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain“.

I challenge you today to speak words that are life-giving, faith-filled. Let’s change the negative around us and speak encouraging words, words of life, not death, word of grace.
