I Am What I Am

Arizona Sunrise 2013

Arizona Sunrise 2013

But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Corinthians 15:10

I have always liked this verse. Even Popeye used the verse when he said, “I yam what I yam.” We often hear people say when they see an unfortunate person, “There I go but for the grace of God.” For us believers, we are where we are by the grace of God.

Paul started out persecuting the church. The grace of God intervened and now Paul was preaching the gospel of grace. He could say it was only by the grace—unmerited favor of God, that he was doing what God called him to do.

I think we all can say that it is by the grace of God, “I am what I am.” That doesn’t mean you always do everything right. Or that your behavior is perfect, but you are allowing God’s grace to work in your life. Grace is a gift. You must take it. You must open the gift. You must believe. Our part in the gift of grace is believing. It begins with salvation and then moves into all the other parts of that amazing grace.

We are not what we are by our works. We are not what we are by luck or good fortune. We are not what we are by environment or family. We are what we are by grace. God has intervened in each of our lives by His grace. We heard the preaching of the Word. We saw God at work. We were given a choice by God’s grace and we made the right choice.

By the grace of God I am what I am and you are what you are.
