Righteousness Is A Gift

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26

We started the story a couple of days ago. Paul has long sentences. He explains the problem and the solution. We can’t earn righteousness by being good because we can’t be good enough. But there is a way to be righteous in God’s eyes.

“Righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.” It is no longer a matter of doing, (we know that doesn’t work) but it’s by believing. That is our part. God has done the rest.

God  declares us righteous through faith or believing in the work of redemption, which is the shedding of the blood of Jesus. What man was unable to do, God stepped in and did for us. God needed a man to save us but there was no man found without sin. God had to send His son who was born without sin. Then he became sin for us that we might be declared righteous through Him.

There are many theological words in this sentence. It’s good to know their meaning but it’s more important to know that by grace we have received all these wonderful things, like justification, remission of sins, redemption, propitiation, and righteousness.

For God so loved, He gave. It’s all grace. It’s a gift freely given to those who believe. That’s the bottom line. The way is available by grace to believers in Jesus. That’s all we have to do—believe. I like God’s way. How about you?
