Who Has Bewitched You

Walking out on the North Myrtle Beach 2013

Walking out on the North Myrtle Beach 2013

1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:1-3

Who has bewitched you? Paul asked the Galatians who has tricked or charmed them into believing something other than the truth.

This is a pertinent question to today’s believers. Webster says to bewitch is “to influence or affect especially injuriously by witchcraft.” We live in a time where the you can find occult themes in ever-increasing circles. Even Christians are duped into going to see movies with bewitching themes. More than the themes of witchcraft, vampires, and others such foolish things is the foolish bewitching Paul speaks about here in this passage.

Paul is basically saying, they had received the Spirit by faith. “For by grace are ye saved through faith.” (Ephesians 2:8) They did not receive the Spirit through works of the law. They didn’t work their way into eternal life. They received it as a free gift.

So if that is the way of salvation—by faith through grace, why did they think they could then live by works of the law. They must live life in the same manner—by faith through grace.

If the works of the law can’t save us, then how can living the law perfect save us? We couldn’t live the law before salvation, how do we expect to do so after salvation. We can’t live by tablets of stone. We can’t live by doing, we can only live by believing—faith.

Many people can’t believe the message of grace. They think they have to do something. They continue trying to earn their way. O foolish people, who has bewitched you? If you are saved by grace, you have to live by grace. If you received the Spirit by grace through faith, you have to walk in the Spirit by grace through faith.
