Endeavor to Keep the Unity of the Spirit

2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3

It seems we are living in a time of unrest. People are easily provoked and fly into a rage. The courts are full of lawsuits. The roads are full of rage. Neighbor is at war with neighbor. Nation against nation. People who are robbed and attacked seek revenge. There is no shortage of murder cases. Where is the peace?

We can’t control what others do. We can witness to the peace found in Jesus. We can forgive. And we can love our neighbor.

Paul says that we should endeavor to do all this. We should try to keep peace with others.

I think this first means unity in the church. God has called us as examples of unity and peace. If our church is backbiting, gossiping, and the leadership is going in different directions, we are not in the unity of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not going to lead us into chaos. He is going to lead us into unity—everyone on the same page.

He is doing this through the bond or the closeness, the uniting principle of peace. When you go to church, you want to sense peace as you walk in the door. You may have had to fight traffic, a spouse or kids before you got to church, but upon opening the door, you should be greeted with the loving peace of God swirling all around you.

Endeavor means — to use speed, to make effort, be prompt or earnest, to do or give diligence, be diligent, labour, and study. (Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary) We have a part. We are to do our best to see that we are part of the peace and not the problems. We should go out of our way to promote love and unity through the bond—the closeness to one another—of peace.

Then we can tackle the world.

Let’s all endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
