Entering The Rest – Part 2

Waterfall

“1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” Hebrews 4:1-2

We continue  to look at the word “rest.” We learned that they (Israel) didn’t enter the rest—promised land because of their unbelief. They we concerned because of the evil report brought back by the 10 spies. They saw themselves as grasshoppers and not through God’s eyes as mighty warriors.

With that as the background—the “therefore”, we can see why the author of Hebrews (ultimately the Holy Spirit) is saying they should carefully consider that just like the people did in the Old Testament, they could do again in the New Covenant.

The New Covenant offers a new rest through Jesus’ finished work on the Cross. The two spies, who thought they should take the land because they served a mighty God, preached the gospel or the good news to the people. However, the rest didn’t put any faith in God and didn’t enter the rest.

We know to enter the rest is by grace through faith. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Simply put, if you don’t have faith and accept God’s gift, you’ll perish. Daily the Word goes out.. For some the preaching of the Word doesn’t profit them. They will not have everlasting life but will perish. They should fear.

Those in the Old Testament wandered in the wilderness until they died. They didn’t enter their rest. We have a new promise. Jesus Saves.
