Interruptions – Part 1

“The steps of a righteous man [or woman]
are ordered [directed and established] by the Lord…”

Psalm 37:23

Interruptions are a part of our lives, aren’t they?  Whether you want them or not, you get them.

I was always taught NOT to interrupt my parents when they were talking, and of course I abided by their instructions. I was always polite and waited until I could ask them a question or tell them something. But there was one time I really wanted to break the rule and interrupt my dad, anyway. We went to see some friends and while my parents were catching up with, their son showed me around their property. By outward appearance, he seemed like a good kid; however, if wasn’t too long until he pulled out some matches and said “watch this!”  What?  I knew that wasn’t a good idea and I told him so. He didn’t listen, and as he touched the lighted match to the dry grass next to their driveway, I ran inside to tell my dad, but I had a problem. I couldn’t interrupt him when he was talking! I knew I had to tell them though, so I persisted. Finally he listened and hurried outside to see the flames moving fast. They got there just in time to pull a small trailer off the lot before it went up in flames. The fire department arrived a few minutes later. My interruption saved everything else, including their house and our car, from going up in flames and that was one time my dad was okay with me interrupting him.

You may not experience anything like that, but you may face unexpected interruptions in your daily routine and life. Be aware that not all interruptions are bad. Some interruptions can be God-directed! We recently were on a several-day trip and went out to the car to leave from the motel one morning and the car wouldn’t start!  Talk about an interruption!  Long story short, we were able to get the car towed and fixed. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to connect with another believer and share about the goodness of the Lord had we not have that ‘interruption’.

I know the Holy Spirit is trying to interrupt our lives continually, but most of the time we’re not sensitive enough to hear Him and follow His leading. Maybe it’s time to recognize that whatever interruption comes in your day, it may be God-directed, so go with (Psalm 37:23). Know that the Lord is orchestrating the steps of your life, and He may just have YOU be the one to share His love with someone who “interrupts” you.  Be ready and be listening and embrace His interruptions.
