Philippians Favorites – 2:5

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

This verse picks up the theme of the previous verse.

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

Now Paul shows us that this was how Jesus thought. He was always putting others before Himself. This is how we are to think also. This is a good example of how Jesus saw things and how His kingdom operates.

I think there is more to this than just thinking like Jesus. Yes, we should renew our minds according to the Word. However, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:16, “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

When we were born-again, we became a new creature. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Our bodies were not born again nor were our souls—thinking, emotions, and will were not born again. Our spirit man is reborn and contains everything Jesus is including His mind.

We have the mind of Jesus in our spirits. Our minds aren’t there yet. We need to move that thinking to our thinking. That is the process of renewing our mind through the Word. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

Our we need to do is let the mind of Christ guide our thinking.
