9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

I wonder if you are like me and read this passage thinking it said “shall bow” and “shall confess.” It uses the subjunctive mood which indicates some contingency. We were probably thinking of Romans 14:11, For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So what’s the deal?

I believe we are looking at two time frames. Everyone should bow while they are here on earth. It’s their choice but “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Salvation is by grace through faith. Faith unto salvation is confessing that Jesus is Lord. Bowing your knee is worshipping the King of Kings. It is the action of making Jesus Lord. We confess and we take action to make Him our Lord.

The second period is after it’s too late here on earth. When we all get to the judgment, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. For the unbeliever, it is acknowledging that Jesus is the Lord they refused to believe. For the believer it will be a time of great celebration as we fall on our knees to worship our Lord and Savior.

Everyone should confess that Jesus is Lord while they have a chance because when it is too late to choose Jesus, everyone shall bow in recognition of the Lord Jesus Christ.
