“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.” Philippians 3:9

Here we are continuing from our last devotion where we discussed Paul losing all to gain Christ.

Paul knew the law and obeyed it. He had righteousness through the law. The law says do right and get good, do wrong, and get bad. It was his ability to do what he thought was right that made him righteous. But it is clear that the law can’t make you righteous. It just points out your flaws. Jesus made it even worse when he said it wasn’t just what you said. It was what you thought as well.

When Paul met Jesus, he realized his righteousness was as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6) He wasn’t good because no one is good in his or her own self-righteousness. (Romans 3:12) Man’s righteousness does nothing to make himself in right standing with God.

When Paul was “in Christ,” he received a completely new kind of righteousness. This is the righteousness found in the grace of God. One receives this righteousness as a gift. You receive it by faith and not by obeying the law. This is the righteousness of God received through the unmerited favor of God through the finished work of Jesus on the cross. This is truly right standing with God. It is the sin removing, debt forgiving, holiness, justification, redemption, and righteousness of God’s amazing grace.
