Philippians Favorites – 4:6

Sunrise on the road I-40 leaving Memphis. 2013

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

Here Paul looks at prayer. Prayer is the antidote for worry. Be anxious, careful, take no thought about those things that are pressing in on you. “But.” Instead of that, pray.

When you are “in” the middle of trying or difficult situations, pray. “Everything” is the Greek word for “all.” In the middle of all things, pray. Be anxious or worried for nothing, which means not one thing. Don’t give any anxious thoughts over to anything. You might say that is hard to do. Those thoughts just creep in all the time. Well, God gave you a way of escape.

By prayer, which is simply talking to the Lord, make your requests known. That is the word meaning ‘to ask’. If you have a “unexpected bill,” ask Him to take care of it. Instead of worrying about it, ask and forget about it. Do you remember the commercial about the rotisserie? “Just set and forget it.”

Always mix your asking with thanksgiving. Ask, receive by faith, and thank Him for the answer to your request. And your requests don’t have to be about needs. God wants to give you all things to enjoy. So ask for things that you can also enjoy. Lord I would like a new iPad. It would sure be helpful. Thank you for your loving provisions.

Are you really making you requests known to God, as if He didn’t know what they are? Sure, He knows but like a father he wants you to ask. Plus when you ask and believe that He is taking care of the situation, you are freed from the worry of it. No need to even think about it again.

Instead of worry, ask.
