Raised By the Same Power

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that
raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by
his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Romans 8:11

“But” is a contrast word from verse 10, “… the body is dead because of sin…” The body is dead both spiritually and is subject to death physically.

It all started in the Garden of Eden.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17

Of course we know the story, they did eat of the forbidden fruit and they were separated from God which is spiritual death. Their bodies, which were design to live on earth forever, became subject to death. Adam lived 930 years and he died.

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die…” (Hebrews 9:27) So all humanity must die–unless Jesus returns first. This earthly body is suited for earth and not for heaven. We must put off the mortal body (body subject to death) and put on our new heavenly body (no longer subject to death.)

“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.” (1 Corinthians 15:21) So the same power that raise Jesus from the dead, will raise us from the dead also. “So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” (1 Corinthians 15:54)

That’s the wonderful promise to the believer. We can know if Jesus was raised from the dead, we will also be raised from the dead. In fact, Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8) We pass from physical death into the presence of the Lord.
