The Unbeliever Can’t Obey God

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Romans 8:7

Verse six starts: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because”. The mind of the flesh hates God or is in opposition to God. It does not think it has to obey the law of God nor can he if he tried.

This is the state of the unregenerate man or woman. We wonder how a person can murder another person. Or how can a person set a bomb of that kills three people and sends 260 to the hospital. They have no allegiance to God or His moral law. Most unbelievers obey the laws of the land because of the punishment, but even then, they are hard pressed to obey. The prisons are full of people who didn’t keep the law of man.

It begins with their relationship with God. There is no relationship with God. “Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.” (Psalm 68:1) First, they don’t believe there is a God, or if they do, they hate Him. It can’t be any other way. Until that person is drawn to God, he will remain in his trespasses and sins and has no desire to obey the precepts of God. He is not empowered by the grace of God to live a life in harmony with God.

“Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners…”, 1 Timothy 1:9 The law is for the lawless but the lawless will not submit to the law. In addition, Paul says, they can’t because there is no reason to submit to a God they hate or don’t believe in.

That’s the mind of the flesh. We need to see that the person who does wrong, who does not know God, isn’t subject to God nor can he. In a sense it really is “the devil made me do it.” He won’t obey a God he doesn’t believe in and he can’t.

This is why I believe that Paul is talking about unbelievers and Spirit indwelt believers. The unbeliever is in enmity with God. The believer might not have it all figured out yet, but he no longer hates God, but is convinced that Jesus is Lord and the God has raised Him from the dead. The flesh or the carnality Paul is talking about has to be the unbeliever.
