PSALM 119:137-144

Hebrew Tz-Tzaddi

( Tsadhe -Tz)

137 Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules.
138
You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness

and in all faithfulness.
139 My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.
140 Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it.
141 I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true.
143 Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your
commandments are my delight.
144 Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me
understanding that I may live.
Psalm 119:137-144, ESV

We saw the theme of God’s righteousness the other day as we looked at this stanza. Today we’re looking into God’s faithfulness. The Psalmist knew God’s faithfulness because He had been faithful to him continually. His God was faithful – always; and he continued to testify to this fact.

In verse 138 the Psalmist says God’s Word is fully trustworthy. I like the New International version of Psalm 89:33-34: “…nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.”  What God promises, He will fulfill.

And Isaiah 55:11 backs that up: “so is My word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” God stands behind His Word and His guarantee is actually better than 100%.

Because the Psalmist knew God’s faithfulness by his own personal experience, he continued to find delight, comfort, understanding, wisdom, and joy in God’s Word. How about you? “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” Let His faithfulness be your foundation and get ready because God is more than ready to show Himself faithful to you.
