Sons Of God

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:14

Several things in this verse Paul is not saying. Some have tried to take “son” in comparison to “child” and say Paul means the mature adult son. Thus, the Spirit leads the true son. The Greek work is the same for son or child. The translator could just have as easily translated it “they are the children of God.” “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26)

The other problem is that some imply there are somehow degrees to following the Spirit. Those who the Spirit truly leads, moment by moment are sons. Those who just seem to listen occasionally are not sons. We know from experience that no one receives the perfect leadership of the Spirit. It’s not the Spirit who fails but it’s us. This also implies that being led by the Spirit is proof you are a son of God. Yes, there should be change, but how does being led by the Spirit manifest itself. This is the same question as to whether a person is truly born again. That is not our work but the work of the Holy Spirit. Let’s don’t start profiling people by whether they are led by the Spirit of God.

“Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3) The Galatians were back to trying to obey the law. They weren’t looking to the Spirit to guide them. In the New Covenant, God writes the law on our hearts. The Spirit leads us to fulfill the law through love and grace and not through obeying laws written on tablets of stone.

What Paul is saying and confirming verse 8:9 is that if the Spirit dwells in you, the Spirit will lead you and you are a child of God. If the Holy Spirit dwells in you, He will lead you. He will change you from within. As you renew your mind to the Word, you will grow in grace and knowledge and more like Jesus. We are sons of God who the Spirit of God is leading. We need to listen and to grow in the Word. The Spirit leads us according to the Word. You are a son (or daughter) of God. The next verse will confirm it.
