The Earth Groans and Travails

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Romans 8:22

“We know” something that most people don’t know. This is a knowing of perception or revelation. This isn’t the knowing of personal intimacy. Paul knew this because the Lord revealed it to him. We can look around and see the creation groaning and travailing. They record over 50 earthquakes a day and many that they don’t record. On the average, there are two tsunamis each year. Believe it or not, there are 50 to 70 volcanoes each year. As I write this, there is one in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska spewing ash miles into the air.

The earth is groaning, moaning, and experiencing a common calamity. It is travailing as in childbirth. Which could mean the focus is on the pain, but it could mean that the birth of something good is inevitable. The burden of sin and death is laying a huge weight on the creation.

Paul says “until now.” That was 2000 years ago but it is still the same for us. It is still groaning and travailing until now. The future shows a new heaven and a new earth. The effects of the burden of sin God will wipe away. Jesus came to save us from our sins, but the earth yet groans until all of sin is removed. We still live in a world of sin and death. The last enemy—death will be destroyed. Earth will at last be free from the bondage of corruption.
