We Wait for Full Redemption

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit,
the redemption of our body. Romans 8:23

“And” not only does the creation groan, but we groan as well. As wonderful as our salvation is right here in this life, it is not complete. The flesh is a constant source of trouble, and even victorious Christians groan for the time when God will deliver from this flesh at the redemption of our bodies (2 Corinthians 5:1-4).

We have the first fruits of the Holy Spirit within us. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14) Where there are firsts, there is more to come.

God has redeemed us through grace by faith. The work of eternal life has begun. The Holy Spirit, who is our down payment for what is yet to come, has sealed our spirits. This adoption Paul refers to is not the same adoption as we saw in verse 15. Well to be more exact, it is a different part of the adoption process. We are children of God, yet not fully spirit, soul, and body. This body, adapted for earthly purposes, God will fully redeem or change into a glorified body suitable for Heaven’s purposes.

It’s almost like adoption. The papers are signed. We are God’s children. We are waiting for Him to pick us up. This groaning is a longing for our new home. We are citizens of a heavenly home. “For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven.” (2 Corinthians 5:2)
