And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:27

In the last verse, we learned that the Holy Spirit is making intercession for us. “And” when God searches our hearts, He knows the mind of the Spirit. The Father and the Holy Spirit are one God. We don’t know what all that means but we do know they “think” alike. “He that searcheth” is God and He knows the Spirit. They are one. He knows the mind and purposes of God for us.

The Holy Spirit is going to make intercession according to God. (The will of is in italics meaning added by the translators). The Holy Spirit knows God and makes intercession accordingly. He knows the Word and He makes intercession according to the Word of God. If we pray according to the Word or will of God, we know He hears us. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.” (1 John 5:14) With the Holy Spirit helping us, we will pray according to God’s Word.

The Holy Spirit also knows of dangers and attacks of which we are unaware. He knows the future and He knows the past. We are confident that He is interceding for our ultimate good.

The Holy Spirit is not only interceding for us, but all his saints. We are saints. We don’t have to reach some status of sainthood before becoming a saint. We are already saints through the finished work of Jesus on the Cross. “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:18)
