Patient Hope

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Romans 8:25

But hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. (Romans 8:24-25)

Last time we talked about hope and that if you can see something with your physical eyes, you don’t need to hope. Paul continues with the idea that if hope is for what we can’t yet see, we will patiently hope for it. We hope for better things.

We see hope and patience tied together. “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:2-5)

Patience leads to hope because you need patience to wait. Patience is a commodity found rarely in believers or anyone for that matter. Problems or tribulation works patience into our character. The hope we have in Christ does not bring shame on us because His love is in us.

It seems sometimes that what we are waiting for is not coming. But patience is perseverance and constancy. We waver not at the time or the problems that come. We waver not on the efficacy of the Word. We patiently wait in faith and hope.

In this verse, our patient waiting is for the coming liberty of the glory of the children of God. We wait for Christ’s return. “He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)
