Effectual Working of the Word

Sunset in MassachusettsFor this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because,
when you received the word of God which you heard of us,
you received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God,
which effectually worketh also in you that believe
.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13

Paul commended the believers at the Church in Thessalonica because they had not only received the Word of God that he preached, but they received that word as truth; and the truth of God’s Word Paul says effectually works in those who believe.

Paul is joyful and thankful because these particular believers not only heard the truth of God’s Word, but that Word worked effectually in them. What does that mean to you and me?

It helps when we look at the Greek meaning of this verse because it gives a much broader understanding; and, the New Testament was written in Greek so by understanding the Greek meaning of the words used, we understand the depth of the truth of God’s Word.

It is the Word of God that effectually works in the believer—that’s you and I. The Greek explains these two words, effectually works, as meaning:  to be active, efficient; be effectual (fervent); be mighty in, work (effectually in). In other words, it is God’s Word that becomes active, efficient in doing its work, making an effect, a mighty work in you.

How does this take place? It only requires an open heart, an open mind, and an eager believer to see the power of God in His Word. As you spend time meditating on God’s Word, your thinking will change to God’s way of thinking. That’s the renewing of your mind. I think it’s similar to repentance which means to change your mind. As you renew your mind in the truth in God’s Word, the truth will change your mind.

The next step is to believe it in your heart, not just intellectually in your head. When God’s Word moves from your renewed mind and settles into your heart, it becomes stronger, an effectual working in your life.

The effectual working of God’s Word in your life will lead you into greater spiritual growth that is active, effective, and effectual. With what you learn through time spent in the Word will enable you to minister the truth of God’s Word to others.

Let God’s Word work effectually in you because the end result is positively glorious!
