Nudgets

Open Bible pic-wide

“…the Holy Spirit…he shall teach you all things;
…He will guide you into all truth; for He shall not speak of himself;

but whatever he hears, that will he speak; and he will show you things to come.”
John 14:26, John 16:13

Jack and I were discussing some things the other day and he said he should write down a thought he had from reading a book. As writers we know thoughts seem to float around us and sometimes we are preoccupied and really don’t entertain the ‘thought’. I quickly pointed to his notebook on the coffee table and said “your notebook’s there; you’d better write it down’. He did, and then said something that leaped inside of me. “You never know when you’ll get nudgets.”

Well, at that point, I quickly went into the kitchen, grabbed a pencil, and wrote “nudgets” on a slip of paper so I wouldn’t forget it.

When I was growing up I had a friend who habitually would tell you something and then give you a nudge and say “Get it?” “Get it?” If you were around this person long enough, you’d know when to expect the nudge and the familiar phrase that followed.

As I had written the word “nudgets”, I immediately had this picture memory in my mind. I could visualize it, and then I could see the spiritual meaning at the same time. I could see the Holy Spirit nudging me in the direction of the Word, into exciting truth in the Word, revealing more of Jesus and His finished work. It wasn’t a harsh nudge, but a gentle nudge to get my attention. He was saying ‘hey, there’s more here. Dig in and I’ll show you some exciting things.”

That’s when I understood how we receive nuggets of the truth of God’s love and grace. The Word is FULL of nuggets of truth and most of the time we have to take those in tiny bites. But along with the tiny bites, the Holy Spirit is all the time nudging us to see more.

I encourage you today to be aware of the Holy Spirit’s “nudgets”. When you’re reading God’s Word and feel a nudge coming, stop and take it in. Truly the nuggets you find will be worth far more than gold. And be ready because ‘you never know when you’ll get nudgets’.
