Follow After

follow the leader ducks

“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.”
1 Timothy 6 :11

I’m sure you played ‘Follow the Leader’ when you were a child. Everyone lined up behind the leader and you did what the Leader did. You quickly found out that if you didn’t do everything the leader did, you were out of the game.

That same picture and thinking may have infiltrated your spiritual walk where you think that by not doing everything correctly or following God rightly, you’re out of His game, that He’s not pleased with you. That’s far from the truth. That is not the picture of a child of God.

Timothy is encouraging believers to continue following God’s righteousness, His faith, love, and patience because that’s who God is. When you turn your thoughts to God’s you’ll see how much He loves you and what He has already provided for you, and you’ll want to follow after His righteousness and His way of living, not after the world’s way.

When you recognize the finished work of Jesus Christ for you, you’ll not want to go elsewhere. And the more you recognize His finished work in you, the more your life will lead you in His peace, joy, love, and grace.

The meaning of ‘follow’ is rich and gives us an instant picture of moving forward, not going backward or staying still. It means to ‘follow after’, to ‘press’, to ‘pursue’. When you follow after God’s righteousness and grace, focusing on Jesus, you will press in to everything that He has provided for you. Transforming your thinking according to His Word is pursuing God. And the exciting thing that happens is that God pursues you with His infinite love and grace and draws you further into all that He has given you.

Don’t just follow, but press in and pursue God. The best is yet to come!
