God’s Power Working in You

1 “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke
in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his
Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things,

by whom also he made the worlds;
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and
the express image of his person, and
upholding all things by the word of his power,
when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down

on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
Hebrews 1:1-3

The other day we found out that not only is Jesus the express image of God, but that we are the ‘spitting image’ of our Heavenly Father when Jesus lives in us.

There is another exciting truth in verse 3. It states that Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power. To uphold means to bear, or bring forth, or carry. Its connotation is one of power and ability to bring forth something from nothing, to hold and continue holding something, never letting it go. It speaks of faithfulness, which God is; it speaks of strength, which God has; it speaks of power, which describes God. These abilities describe Jesus as well.

Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power. His word carries power. His word is power. His word is life-giving. When He was present with God at Creation, His word declared what would be. His word is still declaring what will be today. His word is what God says. God’s word is His authority and power. As a believer, you have the power and authority to speak His word over your life and your circumstances.

He is upholding all things by the word of His power. It’s His power: His ability, not yours. It means that He is able, He has the ability. He is mighty. It is His strength, not yours. So when you tie this into the word of His power, you have the miraculous power of God Almighty working on your behalf doing what is impossible for you but easy for Him. Never underestimate God’s ability to change your life or your circumstances. The more you rely on and trust Him, the more He will show Himself strong in your life. You have the very presence and power of God not only living inside of you and working in your midst. These are exciting truths from Hebrews.
