Ears to Hear God – Part 3

hearing from God pic“Incline your ear unto my sayings. Let them not
depart from your eyes; keep them in

the midst of your heart.”
Proverbs 4:20-21

The other day we said that God desires a personal relationship with you and in that relationship, God will speak to you. He wants to fellowship with you, sharing His love and His heart with you. He wants you to hear Him.

The hearing we’re talking about involves MORE than just your ears—those appendages on the side of your head. Hearing also involves your body, soul, and spirit, your heart. That may sound strange at first. How can you hear with your heart? You hear a lot of “things” that filter through your physical ears but they aren’t deposited into your heart. It’s those things that are deposited into your heart that are what you hear.

What happens when you hear something that is hurtful or mean, especially if it was said to you? Your ears heard the words, but those words hurt your heart, didn’t they? The words might have even caused you to harden your heart against what was said or the person who said it.

Not everything you hear is worth taking into your life or depositing into your heart.  “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”  You won’t speak what isn’t in your heart. But it first comes through the ear canal: your hearing.

Jesus told His disciples to ‘take heed what you hear’. In other words, be careful what you let in through your ear gate (Mark 4:24). Too often we let outside words, especially words of unrest, worry, fear, or unkindness settle in our minds/thoughts; and if we let them, they’ll travel to our heart.

Solomon shares some sound truth in Proverbs 4:20-21. He says: “My son, attend to my words: incline your ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.”

Are you beginning to see the connection of what you hear entering into your heart? What’s in your heart in abundance will eventually come out of your mouth; that means you’ll speak what is really inside of you.

Be aware of what you’re hearing today. Be aware of what you are allowing into your heart. Guard your heart because from your heart flow the issues or the outgoings of life (Prov. 4:23).

We’ll look further into this next time, so stay tuned.
