It’s Good News

Sun rays“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” Luke 2:10

When the angel announced the birth of Jesus, it was good tidings. That’s the same word as gospel. The gospel is good tidings or as we have come to call it—good news.

We have heard a lot about the gospel. However, everything we hear isn’t good news. Another way to say it is the “almost too good to be true news.” The gospel is good news—underline good. If the gospel you’re hearing is exciting good news then you are probably hearing the gospel of Christ or the gospel of grace.

The signature statement for good news is it brings great joy. The gospel is a joyous announcement of what Jesus has done for us. He’s taken away our sins. He has forever forgiven us. By His stripes He healed us. Yes, we have fire insurance and heaven assurance. But wait, there is more—much much more. This is all good news.

The gospel is simple. It takes highly trained people to complicate it. If you feel overwhelmed with all you have to do, then you are not hearing the gospel. If you feel condemned, guilty, and ashamed that’s not good news. It’s simple. God has completed it for you. It’s grace, unearned, unmerited, undeserved favor. That should set you free to enter into the joy of the Lord.

So remember, good news, joy, and simplicity are all the earmarks of the true gospel; and today you can celebrate it with renewed meaning for the gift of God’s Son, Jesus.
