The Path of Life

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

David was sure that God would show him the path of life. He knew that the word was the light he needed to make it along the path of life.

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 16:25) It’s easy to get off the path because other ways seem right. We live in a world where we are told many paths lead to life. We have paths of dieting. We have paths of financial planning. We have paths to self-fulfillment. There are more forks in the road that we would like. So we need a guide.

The Word is our guide. Like Yogi Berra would say, “When you see a fork in the road, take it.” When we see a fork in the road follow the truth.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Jesus is all three. Not only is He the way—the path of life, He is the life found in that path. That is the path of truth.

When you need guidance, you have the Holy Spirit living within you, who will guide you into all truth. (John 16:13) “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:14) I think Jesus was speaking about the law as the gate. Not many will find life through the gate of the law. But Jesus is the door. Anyone who enters that door will find life and find it abundantly.

Jesus lives within us. The kingdom is within us. We are the gate to life for others. Jesus speaks through people who share the good news of God’s grace. We have to open the floodgates. (John 7:38) Allow the word to flow out to others so they might see the path that leads to life.
