Watching From a Distance

bridge

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1)

Bette Midler sang a Nanci Griffith song in 1990 “From a Distance.” In it, the lyrics said, “God was watching from a distance.” That is some people’s theology. God is not involved in the lives of people. He just started things going and is watching now. Reminds me of the old movies where it showed the gods up somewhere looking down on earth.

David looked around and saw all the wickedness and the disrespect for God and wondered “where are you God? Aren’t you going to do something about all this troublesome times going on down here?”

There are people today wondering that same thing. They see the tragedies and the senseless death going on and they ask “God, where are you?” From that, they develop a theology that God can’t be around unholy people who sin. He has to separate Himself from the terrible wicked world.

Some Christians feel like God is nowhere to be found when they need Him. Consequently think they have done something wrong. He has turned His back on them. They figure He is testing them.

That’s all wrong thinking. God told Joshua “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” (Joshua 1:5) The writer to the Hebrews quotes this for us also if your think the other verse is old covenant. “…I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) Further more Jesus said, …we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” (John 14:23)

God dwells in us. He isn’t going anywhere. He is never, no never afar off. If it seems so then change your thinking and realize God is there for you right now. He will never, never leave you.
