I’m No Worm

House in Yorktown

Historic house in Yorktown Virginia 2012

“But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.”
(Psalm 22:6)

This Psalm is a messianic Psalm. It is all about Jesus. Many of the people considered Jesus a worm and a reproach. He was despised. We see the same thing in Isaiah. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” (Isaiah 53:3) Jesus bore much more than pain on the Cross. His fellow Jews rejected him. “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” (John 1:11)

Jesus was all that, and more. He went to the Cross to bear the shame so that we wouldn’t have to carry that burden.

Sadly, many Christians see themselves as a worm, just an old sinner saved by grace—that saved a wretch like me. Yes, they say, I’m saved, but I’m still a sinner. They do this thinking they are being humble but it is a slap in the face of Jesus who bore all that so we wouldn’t. Yes, I was a wretch and a sinner, but now I’m a child of God, and a saint and king.

Jesus took away our sins so we can’t be sinners any longer. We can boldly go into the presence of God because He made us righteous and holy. No longer do we fear his punishment and wrath, because Jesus bore it all. It’s a done deal. I we should be living in that.

I’m no worm and neither are you. When you feel like you are because of some mistake you made, God loves you anyway and is never mad at you. Just say, oops and don’t do that again. Your Father loves you more than you can imagine. Never slither toward Him like a worm. You are His child. Walk boldly. There are no worms in the Kingdom.
