Why Are You Down On Life?

Yorktown Parkway1

Yorktown Parkway Virginia 2012

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalm 42:11)

One thing about David, and the Bible as a whole, is that things aren’t all a bowl of cherries. David bares his soul. He bares his struggles. Things in life don’t always work out as planned. Sometime you get a flat tire. You don’t know why. Little things can get you down.

That’s when you have to catch yourself such as David did. He quoted this saying twice. In verse 5 the translators used “help” and here they used “health.” The King James translators did not like to use the same word over again. Both words mean the same thing. It means to deliver as well as it is translated salvation many times in the Bible.

I want to look at the first part. When David saw he was down on life, he would ask himself “why.” Why are you down, soul? Why is your soul in an uproar? He would ask, what’s going on here that has me depressed today. In SparkPeople.com they have a mood meter. You are to set your mood each day between 1 bad and 10 absolutely wonderful. David was checking his mood. He didn’t set it too high. He asks himself why.

He asks why you are down on life because God is there always to help you. I’m always curious why Christians are depressed. I know one minister who always said he never had a sad day. Can that be? People are sad and depressed for a reason. It’s usually about something that is not going well in their lives. It’s worry or anxiety about something.

David reminded himself just to praise the Lord. He needed to get his thinking off his problems and onto the Lord. He did that through praise and worship. It is by looking at God who is far bigger than any little problem he had. He realized that God was his help. God was his health. God was his salvation.

If you woke up this morning and your mood meter was a little low, then begin to thank and praise God for all that He has given you. If you are depressed—why. It’s in your soul. Renew your thinking today according to the Word. Why are you depressed when God has done so much for you? Rejoice in His love and provision. Take your eyes off yourself and put them on Jesus. Look to Him to save you from your situation.
