Your Shield

Colorful clouds 2 in MA-wide

“But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.”
Psalm 3:3

In Psalm 3 we find the Psalmist asking for God’s protection because he had just fled from Absalom who sought to kill him.  Here was the King fleeing from his own son. Yet, even in the midst of a terrible situation, David makes a strong declaration of God’s protective care. ‘You, Lord,’ he says, ‘are a shield, a protector, and my defense’.

But, he didn’t stop at just that declaration. He was speaking to the Lord. He spoke who God was and what He would do. As David lifted up His name, God was David’s shield, keeping him from assault, repelling the attacks, and securing His protection.

We don’t use real shields today, but we do have the shield of faith and we need to use it daily. Faith will stop the opposition. Faith declares the truth of God’s Word. Faith speaks what God has said. It’s important to feed your faith, and you do that with the Word of God.

No matter what you may face today or even tomorrow, God’s Word is your shield from the attacks, accusations, and lies of the enemy and people. “It is written…” cuts the enemy down to nothing more than a whinny insect unable to do anything to do. That’s how you should react when faced with the ‘stuff’ in life. Declare WHO God is in your midst and be bold in your declaration.

In his boldness, David found a place of protection further declaring that God lifts and raises him up, and holds him far above the enemy’s reach. We see him as being in good hands, secure and safe just as you are in the Lord.

It is in this place of faith and rest that David sees the Lord as his glory: high and lifted up as David continually gives Him praise and thanksgiving. It isn’t anything that David does in his own strength. His strength is in the Lord, and He praises and honors God for His goodness and preservation.

Whatever you face today or tomorrow or next week, do as David did. Raise up your shield of faith by declaring who your God is and who you are IN Him. Then rest in His protection and grace.
