Like a Green Olive Tree

Tree in Yorktown 700x400

Old tree in Yorktown VA (not an olive tree) 2012

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.” (Psalm 52:8)

David calls himself a green olive tree. One commentary I read says the olive trees are not exactly green. A search on Google images does show several colors of trees. The Hebrew word does mean green but figuratively means prosperous and flourishing.

I found this interesting tidbit about olive trees.

“The olive tree is native to the Mediterranean region. Development of the olive was one of civilized man’s first accomplishments; Eight thousand year-old olive seeds have been found. Olives are long-lived with a life expectancy of 500 years. Thus, olive trees have been and continue to be a significant part of Jerusalem’s landscape.”

From this, I think David was referring to himself as prospering, flourishing, and living a long life. That can be our confession as well.

Olive oil is our favorite oil. We use it in salads and in cooking. It is one of the healthiest oils. It’s very useful for watching you weight. This isn’t just a pretty tree. It bears good fruit.

I don’t think David meant green olives. I like green olives. Charlene doesn’t. I can’t think of a good correlation for that. It’s just a note for free.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:3)

David says he was like this tree in the house of God. Most do not believe there were trees in the house of God. But when he went to the house of God he was like this flourishing fruitful tree.
