Romans 16:9 – Beloved in Christ

Romans 16-9 700x400
Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys my beloved.”
 (Romans 16:9 NASB)

Here are two people who received recognition by Paul in his letter to the Romans. Two real people we have no other information about who entered into the annals of history and in the Word. Both or masculine names and probably converts in Rome. Paul was recounting many of those who had helped him in the cause of spreading the good news.

I think Paul recognized that they had the characteristics of being in Christ. Urbane or Urbanus was his co-worker. He worked alongside of Paul and shared in the message of grace. Paul was never too proud or felt himself too important to see others who were working for the cause of Christ as equals—fellow workers. He saw that everyone who was in Christ had a part to play in the work of the Kingdom. We won’t know what that was until we meet him in heaven.

Stachys was also another anonymous name listed in Paul’s salutation. Of the 27 people listed, Stachys is one of three Paul calls his beloved. This word is from the Greek agape. It’s the same word that the Father calls Jesus out of the heavens. This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased” (Matthew 3:17 NASB). It is a word of endearment. It reveals a special love in the Lord, which Paul had for people. He saw them as Jesus saw them. They were the beloved of the Lord.

Two names that people have read in Chapter 16 of Romans since it they compiled it. Just a reminder that in Christ our names are in the book kept in Heaven. God has not blotted out their names. Jesus holds the names of those in Christ near His heart. It’s not so much about what they have done, but who they are in Christ. They are fellow workers with Christ and are the beloved of Christ.

That’s how God sees you as well when He sees you in Christ.
