The Offering of Praise

Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me…” (Psalm 50:23)

In this Psalm God is telling David I don’t need your bulls and goats. I own the cattle on a thousand hills. If it was that God was hungry, then He’d say so. However, God would rather you offer praise.

Praise brings God the glory. We can’t add to His glory. He is God the Almighty. So why does our praise glorify God?

“Praise is a setting forth of God’s honour, a lifting up of his name, a displaying the trophy of his goodness, a proclaiming his excellency, a spreading his renown, a breaking open the box of ointment, whereby the sweet savor and perfume of God’s name is sent abroad into the world.” (The Treasury of David.)

Praise shouts to God goodness and grace. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (Revelation 4:11)

Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.” (Hebrews 2:12) We declare our allegiance to the name of our God. We lift up the name of Jesus and His finished work on the Cross.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16) Praise is celebrating what God has done for you. Praise is rejoicing in Him. It is showing our love for Him.

What will we be doing throughout eternity? We will praise His name forever.

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” (Ephesians 1:6) We are adopted sons and daughters to the praise of the glory of His grace.
