1 Corinthians 4:17 – Ways in Christ

1 cor 4-17 700x400

For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.” (1 Corinthians 4:17 NKJV)

Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he was sending Timothy to them. Later in the letter he expresses some doubt as to whether Timothy would actually make it there. Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without cause to be afraid, for he is doing the Lord’s work, as I also am.” (1 Corinthians 16:10 NASB) It’s not certain if he made it or not.

Had he arrived in Corinth he would remind them “of my ways in Christ.” I don’t think we need to limit this phrase in any way. Paul had a message of grace. Timothy knew the message. He would remind them, call them to remembrance, and bring it once again to their minds the ways of Paul’s teaching.

The mind is forgetful. “23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was” (James 1:23-24 NASB). The Corinthians needed to be reminded of Paul’s ways.

In the previous verse, he told them to be imitators of him. He taught this in all the churches to which he went. It was one gospel—the gospel of grace. Paul knew that they needed constant reminding.

We need to renew our minds (Romans 12:2). Paul’s ways are in his letters. Paul’s ways are scripture. We need to renew our minds with the Word. We need to bring to remembrance the things we have learned. So often, we forget lessons learned and verses memorized. These are the ways in Christ. This is the road we are on—the progress, the distance we have come. Christ takes us these ways through our journey here on the earth. Remember the ways in Christ.
