2 Corinthians 5:17 – New Creations in Christ

2 cor 5-17 700x400

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

Here is perhaps the definitive definition of being in Christ. We are now a new creature or new creation. Believers are an entirely new creation.

The key is the phrase, if anyone is in Christ. This means not everyone is a new creation. You have to be in Christ. In fact, if anyone is in Christ, he is new creation.

“3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (John 3:3-7)

You must be born again to be a new creation. Of course Jesus was talking about the spirit. Our spirits are new creations. They were dead in sin, but now made alive in Christ. Our bodies and souls (mind, emotions, will) remain the same. This is a spiritual rebirth. We know have a spirit, which is perfect, holy, righteous, and has within it everything God has provided by grace.

The old is gone, everything is new. The old sin nature is gone. We have a new nature. We have the nature of God in whose image we were originally created. God has restored that image. Everything Jesus is, we are in our spirits. “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.” (1 John 4:17)

All this has been accomplished through Christ. We have this because we are in Christ. Jesus is the way through which this became ours. It’s a gift. It’s by grace.
