Galatians 6:15 (NKJV)
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything,
but a new creation.”
A couple of days ago we discussed the Old Testament ordinance of circumcision. We saw it means nothing in the New Covenant. The New Covenant requires nothing of us. God did it all. All the things that were impossible, God made possible through Jesus. Keeping rules is not New Covenant. Being under the burden of the law is not New Covenant. None of that means anything. We are under the rule of grace.
Paul adds an important factor here in this verse. Keeping the rules doesn’t mean a thing. The thing that really makes a difference is if you are a new creation in Christ Jesus.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB). By grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus is the only way through which you can be saved. And that salvation is the only thing that means anything.
Keeping commandments, rules, ordinances, and statutes won’t save you. So they have no meaning to your salvation. You can’t boast in any works ever. They are meaningless. God gets all the glory. The main thing is whether you are a new creation, a child of God. If that’s settled, then you are in Christ Jesus.
That’s the place of rest from dead works such as circumcision. It’s a place bought and paid for by the precious blood of Jesus on the cross. It’s what He has done for you. You just have to believe that He has done that for you. You didn’t merit it nor did you deserve it. But Jesus did it for you anyway. That’s love. That’s grace.
The old man and the old nature are gone. You are in Christ with a new nature and a spirit made alive. Religion says following the rules to life. Jesus says just follow me. Believe the truth and look to Jesus who is your total being.
