Philippians 3:14 – High Calling in Christ

Philippians 3-14 700x400

Philippians 3:13-14
13Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting  those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Bible translators have translated the “high calling” in many ways. It’s the high calling, upward call, high purpose, heavenward call, and called from above. The Amplified Bible is an example of an alternate translation. “I press on toward the goal to win the [supreme and heavenly] prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.”

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Timothy 1:9) “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:18) “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.” (1 Corinthians 1:26) “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.” (Hebrews 3:1)

God has called us by His grace. We can’t work for it. It was given to us before the world began. He has called us in Christ. It’s a heavenly calling in that the call came from above to us through Jesus. It also is a call to a heavenly prize. The calling is above—it’s a high calling. It calls us to things above. “1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2)

There is a prize for this high calling. It’s set before us. Let’s press for it as a runner launches for the finish line. We have this high calling in Christ.
