Philippians 3:3 – Boast in Christ

Philippians 3-3 700x400

Philippians 3:3
“For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit,
and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

When we see the word circumcision which was an Old Testament external sign of covenant, we think of our covenant with God through Jesus. We are the ones now who have a New Covenant. We aren’t obligated to perform outward rituals as we have no confidence in the flesh to get God to accept us.

For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort…” (NLT)

We are the ones who worship God in Spirit and in truth. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24) We are the ones Jesus talked about.

Rejoice is not the normal word we see for rejoice as in “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4) Here the word has more of the meaning of boast or glory in. The Darby Translation, in fact ,says it that way. “For we are the circumcision, who worship by [the] Spirit of God, and boast in Christ Jesus, and do not trust in flesh.”

We don’t put any confidence in our abilities or efforts to cause God to bless us or reward us. We are in Christ, so our confidence is in Jesus and the finished work of the cross. We can’t do anything to make God love us more or less than He does. We can’t do things to make Him bless us. We are already blessed in Christ. We are the ones worshipping through the Spirit of God. We have the Spirit within wherein we cry Abba.

We are the true covenant people. We are true worshippers. We boast in Jesus. “But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14 NASB)

Don’t rely on your self-efforts but rely on what Jesus has done for you. You can count on Him.
