2 Timothy 1:13 – Life-giving Words In Christ

2 timothy 1-13 700x400

2 Timothy 1:13
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me,
in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Hold to sound words. The Greek word for sound is hygiainō. That’s the word we get our word hygiene. So it refers to health, wholesome, healing, and safe (as in safe and sound). These are the words Paul had delivered to them. And it’s the kind of words we should deliver to others.

We’ve talked many times about how important our words are both for us and for others. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”(Proverbs 18:21). Sound words are life-giving words. They are healing words.

These are the words Jesus spoke. He came to heal and to give life. “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Jesus never discouraged people. He always encouraged them. He lifted up. He came with a mission of restoration. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18). He carried out the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1. He would speak life do a world lost in sin. He preached the gospel of good news.

Hold fast, keep in mind and always have ready the form or pattern of words that Paul delivered and Jesus before him. Positive words are faith-filled words. “Holding fast the faithful word…” (Titus 1:9).

These are words filled with faith and love which we find in Christ. These are not words of doubt, calamity, chaos, and fear. These are the words of belief, peace, love, and grace. That is what Paul is trying to tell us to do. Speak sound words. Fill you heart with God’s word for out the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45).

Hold to words of life. Speak life-giving words.
