2 Timothy 3:15 – Scriptures Point to Salvation in Christ

2 timothy 3-15 700x400

2 Timothy 3:14-15
14
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of,
knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures,
which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Paul writing to Timothy reminded him that he knew the scripture from an early age. Timothy’s mother and grandmother were Jewish and his father was Greek. Timothy’s mother taught him the Old Testament. Although perhaps the gospels were in existence before this letter, it is doubtful he would  know those writings. So if Paul told Timothy he learned the salvation through faith from the Old Testament, he would have had that revealed from Paul. The Old Testament had the mystery of Jesus hidden. But once you know the finished work of Jesus, the Old Testament opens up to the person of Jesus and His salvation on the Cross.

Paul made an important statement here. (We know that is was the Spirit writing through Paul, but for simplicity we will say Paul wrote it.) He showed the importance of the scripture. Paul wrote letters which we now view as scripture. In fact in 2 Peter 3:16 Peter calls Paul’s writings scripture. Can you imagine how we would understand the faith if we had no writings. God foresaw all this and made sure that what He wanted recorded was written. That’s part of the reason God waited until He sent Jesus, because the Greek language which was prevalent at the time was an outstanding language for the New Testament.

That the scriptures are most important cannot be emphasized enough. How many times have I seen a Bible sitting on the coffee table prominently displayed but unused. If you want to get wise concerning your salvation, you have to look in the scriptures. Your salvation is much more than fire insurance. It is health and life. It is rescue and deliverance and so much more. Look in the scriptures to see all the benefits of the grace God has for you through the Cross of Jesus. This is all a part of being in Christ.
