Colossians 3:4 – Appearing With Him

Colossians 3-4 700x400

Colossians 3:4
“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall you appear with him in glory.”

I like how Paul uses the phrase ‘with Him’ in this verse. I immediately have the picture of being with someone, linked arm-in-arm walking down a beautiful country road in the glorious sunshine, a warm breeze gently blowing. It’s an endearing picture. It’s a picture of friends walking together or a husband and wife or a mother and her daughter walking together enjoying a special moment. It’s not a picture of separation or isolation, but of oneness, togetherness. You’re not separated, but with.

“With Him” has such a warm ring to it, and the Apostle Paul shares with the Colossian believers that this oneness is how it will be when believers join the Lord in glory. He had just explained that our life is already hidden with Christ in God. And since we’re already hidden with Christ, then when He appears, we will also appear with Him.

Our Lord is closer than our breath. He is IN us. He is WITH us. What comfort and joy there is in knowing that nothing can separate us from Him. “Nothing shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus”.

“With Him” also indicates that you are not with someone else. Wherein times past you were with the world in your thoughts and ways but when Jesus became your Lord and Savior, you were no longer with the world.

The world is a lonely place on your own. Some people may deny that they need someone else. Some may refuse the fellowship of others, but deep down there is something sad, something dark about not being with someone. Man was meant for fellowship because God is a fellowship God. Man was meant to be part of God’s family and that means daily fellowship and interaction. Man was not meant to isolate himself and draw away from God.

“With Him” is the picture of oneness, the interaction and fellowship of God with His creation. He encourages us to draw near because He has things to show us, things to tell us that we can’t even imagine. It’s in being with Him that we find our place of total being. When we are with Him, we are in Him and He is in us. We are united in Him. Rejoice that you have fellowship with Him.
