Establishing Your Heart

Mt. Le Conte

Mt. Le Conte

Hebrews 13:9
“…for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace…”

When I think of the word ‘establishing’, I find this definition:  set up (an organization, system, or set of rules) on a firm or permanent basis. Then I picture the Pilgrims establishing their first colony in the new world. I’m sure you’ve seen the signs by businesses that have been around awhile – ‘Established in 1989 and Still Growing Strong’. Like the Pilgrims, older businesses learned what it meant to establish themselves in a community.

Notice this verse says ‘it’s a good thing for your heart to be established. It’s important in your Christian life to build on a strong foundation and be established in that foundation. Don’t build your house-or life-on the sand, but on the rock so it’s stable, steady, and strong. For believers this means being established on the strong foundation of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross. Don’t let your heart be established in the world or its ways. Its foundation is shaky at best and it cannot offer permanent stability for you. Especially in these days you all need stability and you find it in God’s Word.

But notice there’s more to the verse in Hebrews. It says not only are you to be established in your faith through Jesus [because you believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead which results in a transformation otherwise known as salvation] but make sure your heart is ‘established with grace”. How does grace help establish you?

Recognize that if you’re trying to earn God’s approval and merit, you’re not established IN grace. If you’re trying to do things to get His blessings, you’ve missed the fact that He’s already done the work. You don’t have to do anything because Jesus did it all. The only thing you need to do is receive what He’s done. Then the more you grow in Him, the more you’ll be established with grace.

Make sure you establish your heart in the truth of God’s grace today because this foundation will last forever.
