Press On

Just Keep Walking - Pic on Pier by Ange

Philippians 3:13-14
13…forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

What happens in life if you don’t ‘press on’? Undoubtedly you won’t move from where you are. God designed that we are to keep going forward, not backward. From the time you are mobile as an infant, you are continually moving forward.

That’s what Paul is talking about in Philippians 3:14. Paul knew that we humans can get ‘stuck in a rut’ and not make forward progression when we cling to the past and don’t leave it behind. You can’t get very far when you keep looking behind you and at the same time trying to move forward. In most likelihood you’ll stumble and fall. It’s like trying to drive forward while only looking in your rearview mirror.

Too often believers get stuck in looking back to what is past, either out of desire to go back to what was, or out of fear of uncertainty for what is ahead. But forward progression is what is about. For the children of Israel He led them with the cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night but it was always forward progress. Many times they complained about the hardships and they just wanted to go back to Egypt—to the bondage and hardships they endured day after day. But God in His mercy and delivered them, and had them press on, moving forward to His promised land.

We’re not any different. We still get stuck in ruts in our lives and want to go back to things that were comfortable and known even if they weren’t good. We don’t want to progress with the times. We like where we are. And we know that the older you get, the harder it is at times to make changes because we all like things the way they are—or were.

It’s time to put the past behind you—including the hurts and issues that have assaulted you. You can’t continue climbing up the mountain if you’re carrying all that garbage on your back. Put the past behind you. Keep moving forward in your spiritual walk. Press on—forward.
